Happy Thanksgiving Week! Are you ready for Thursday? I’m clearly running behind this week, as this was supposed to be a Friday Faves post, and then a Monday Faves post, and now here we are, two days before the big day. You probably have all of your menu planning figured out, your shopping done, and everything prepped as much as possible by now.  But hopefully a few of these links might still come in handy, or perhaps like me, you can just bookmark them for next year.

Hello, Friday! I hope everyone had a wonderful short week, and is looking forward to a relaxing (and football-filled!) weekend. I’m excited for the first Husky home game tomorrow (even if it is EPSN’s “upset alert” of the weekend – yikes), and for a Sunday filled with lots of good fantasy matchups (since my Hawks already killed it last night). What are you up to this weekend? I’m heading to the coast for my cousin’s bachelorette party – we’re excited for some cooler beach temperatures after another sweltering week. And Baby Nephew Watch 2014 is officially ON – T minus one week to go.  I’m so excited I can hardly stay away from the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale bear it. Doctor says he might be early, so next week’s Friday Faves could be all baby pics (don’t say I didn’t warn you)!! My poor sis is more than ready for him to make his debut, but I’m hoping he sits tight until at least Wednesday so that he’s a Leo (not that I particularly care about astrological signs, but I’ve bought him a LOT of lion stuff and I don’t want it to be for naught).

  • How to make entertaining look easy – I would add “get yourself ready ahead of time.”  My aunt threw a dinner party this past Christmas and told me she told my uncle beforehand “our goal is to be sitting on the couch with a glass of wine half an hour before the guests arrive.” I’m usually still drying my hair when my guests arrive, but the thirty minute/wine/couch rule is now my goal too.
  • How to be the most popular person at a party – my friend Larisa brought these to a beach weekend a couple months ago and they were amazing! 
  • How to cure a headache – I need this! 
  • How to get really excited about this movie – ok this really isn’t a “how to” – but it does make me VERY excited for October 3rd!!  I hope you’ve all read the book – even if you hated the ending.  And if you haven’t read it yet, you have 2.5 months!

Friday Faves: Easter Edition

Happy Good Friday! I hope everyone is looking forward to a weekend full of sunshine (?), egg hunts, and chocolate. What are some of your favorite Easter traditions? I love going to mass with my family on Sunday morning – our parish has the most amazing choir and they sing almost all of my favorite “church songs” at Easter mass.  I used to love indulging in whatever I had given up for Lent at brunch, but this year I didn’t give up anything so I guess that’s out.  My eight year old cousin told me last night that Lent ends the Wednesday before Holy Thursday, has anyone ever heard of this?  He claims the priest at his school told his whole class.  Theoretically, the priest would know better than me, but I was skeptical so we looked it up and the answer isn’t entirely straightforward.  I’m choosing to stick with my lifelong understanding that Lent ends on Easter, but Nolan gave up chocolate this year and he really wanted to eat a chocolate chip ice cream sandwich last night, so he’s going with what his priest told him.  If anyone can shed any light on this debate, I would love to hear it in the comments.

Everyone seemed to find it pretty odd that I made an Easter basket for a baby due this summer – I don’t really understand why, but I guess perhaps not everyone loves buying baby gifts as much as I do? I had so much fun putting it together – and someday Baby P will know how much I loved him even before he was born, even if his mother thinks I’m nuts. Basket and liner from Pottery Barn Kids, safari blanket from Serena & Lily, sleeper from Hanna Anderson, books from Amazon, bottle from Life Factory (and filled with peanut butter M&Ms, which might have been the hit of the basket), bunny lovey and rattle from Bunnies by the Bay, paper grass from Paper Source (seems minor, but good easter basket grass is harder to find than you might think!).

Friday Faves, Valentine’s Day Edition

Happy Valentine’s Day, friends!  And happy first birthday to Blueberries and Basil, which celebrated the conclusion of it’s inaugural year this past week (remember my first post?)  Valentine’s Day is the best holiday for cookie decorating, I think – although I might think that about every holiday. I made these conversation hearts pre-blog two years ago (inspired by Cupcakes and Cashmere), and although my decorating skills have improved since then, I still have a long way to go. It just takes so much patience! I also really love the tiny pastel hearts and the cupcakes, inspired by this amazing cookie blog (which I discovered thanks to my friend Kristen).

My godmother, a fellow Valentine’s Day lover, gave me these little bowls a few years ago – I love digging them out each year and filling them with my favorite Valentine’s candy. Similar here and here.  (Let’s not talk about how many candy hearts I’ve eaten in the past week.)

I bought this little outfit for my first niece/nephew, who is due at the end of July. I’m trying not to shop too much before we know if it’s a boy or a girl, but this little gender neutral outfit was too cute to pass up (the hat says “HUGS” on the back!!). The hat is sold out online, but you can find the little onesie here (a more girly version here, more boyish here, all on sale!) – it’s probably too late for this year, but in case anyone else is planning ahead!

My mom and I discovered this line of Parisian specialty teas at the Plaza Hotel when we were in NYC this past December. She loves the original Detox tea, but I’m obsessed with the “BB” version, which is a lighter, grapefruit-y version of the Detox and has added benefits for your skin. Like a tea version of a BB cream, get it? And so delicious.

Halloween Faves

Happy Halloween, everyone! This week’s favorites are coming a day early, since I needed a full post to celebrate one of my very favorite holidays. I feel like Halloween snuck up on me this year – I didn’t get around to carving a pumpkin, or putting together a costume, or making any homemade candy (Twix and Reese’s were on my list – maybe next year!). Despite all that, however, I’m still excited to hand out (store-bought) candy and see all the trick-or-treaters tonight. Seattle’s forecast is looking dry, which of course is the best Halloween news – nothing sadder than having to cover up your costume with a raincoat.  I hope everyone has a spook-tacular day, and gets lots of candy tonight!

Friday Faves

Happy Labor Day Weekend, friends! Its always a little bitersweet to say goodbye to Summer, but I think Fall is in the air – it was gray and rainy in Seattle yesterday, college football starts tomorrow, and in case you haven’t seen it all over Facebook/Instagram, the Pumpkin Spice Latte is back (a few weeks early, IMHO). I’m looking forward to celebrating my cousin Max’s wedding tonight, and the first Husky game in our new stadium tomorrow. I hope everyone has fun plans for the long weekend!

Very Berry Sangria, from Real Simple Magazine

1 bottle of red wine (750 ml)
1/2 cup raspberries (fresh or frozen)
1/2 cup blackberries (fresh or frozen)
1/2 cup blueberries (fresh or frozen)
1/2 cup strawberries, sliced
1 12 oz. bottle of ginger ale
1/2 cup sugar (or simple syrup, to taste)
2 oz. blackberry liqueur

Toss the wine, berries, sugar or simple syrup, and liqueur in a pitcher, cover, and refrigerate overnight. Pour in ginger ale just prior to serving. Fill individual glasses with ice and pour sangria over ice. We then topped with champagne, optional. Cheers!
