Happy Friday! What are you all up to? I’m looking forward to a low key weekend for the first time in awhile. We finally have some fall weather in the forecast, and I’m not going to lie, I’m kind of excited to have an excuse to wear my Hunter boots. And I have a ton of apple recipes I want to try, so rainy day baking sounds kind of heavenly. In the meantime, some fun links (recipes, movie reviews, online shopping) and pics to help get you a little closer to 5 pm:

  • I can’t do another butternut squash bowl recipe, but how good do these look?
  • Is it wrong that I want all of the flannel shirts at Madewell right now? Specifically this one, this one, and this one. (Funny story, I was in the store a couple days ago and asked the salesgirl where to find the one she was wearing, as it was my favorite. She told me she found it at the Goodwill for $1.50.  Not what I needed to hear when I was already feeling guilty about paying $80 for something I used to own ten of back in my wannabe-grunge days!!). I should probably order this one from Old Navy instead! New career – splurge/save editor for Us Weekly!?!
  • PSA – the Serena & Lily Friends and Family sale is on now – and it runs through Tuesday, which is perfect timing for me as that’s the day I find out if I’m getting my first niece or another nephew next March! (They have tons of amazing non-baby stuff too though!).
  • Can’t wait to dive into my copy of this book.
  • After literally not going to a movie theatre in what feels like years, I’ve been on a real movie kick lately. I’ve been seeing a ton of previews for The Judge – didn’t get a great review but I’ll probably go see it anyways.

I ordered a new face wash the other week and chose fun samples of la mer moisturizer, la prarie eye and lip cream, and the new jo malone scent – jo malone because i love keeping the sample sizes in my purse; the first two because I could never afford them in real life}

{soaking up these last few sunny days}

Happy Friday, friends!  I don’t say this often, but I feel like this past week flew by. How is it already October? My little baby nephew is two months old today – time really does fly, as they say. He’s getting so big (sob!).  Any fun plans for the weekend? I’m heading to a farmhouse wedding tomorrow, and then brunch with my book club girlfriends on Sunday. And I get to meet not one but two new babies, Charlie and Cameron (belonging to my friends Heather and Karrie, respectively).  Going to see Gone Girl tonight – CAN. NOT. WAIT. I suspect it might be a huge disappointment, but hopefully I’m wrong.  Wishing everyone a sunny and relaxing weekend! Some fun links and pics (I hope you guys appreciate these links, because sometimes it’s really hard to come up with five good ones 🙂 But I do it because I love you – and I know how hard it can be to get through a Friday sometimes so hopefully this helps you kill some time!):

  • This tailgate looks AH-mazing
  • Because I always want a crispy crust when eating leftover pizza
  • I’ve been getting a ton of compliments on my skin lately – want to know my secret? (in “warm soul” and I use it more like a bronzer)
  • Grilled cheese? Yes, please!
  • The best color, for all things, all of the time

Not pictured but a must for any baby halloween gift – skull diapers.}

Happy first fall Friday! I hope everyone has exciting plans for the weekend, ideally involving apple picking or a tailgate.  I’m attempting both – Husky game tomorrow, Honeycrisp picking on Sunday. Can’t wait to make some applesauce (and probably a crisp or two). The forecast is 75, but I might still be tempted to wear a flannel shirt and/or a plaid scarf. In the meantime, some highlights from my week and fun links from around the web. Wishing you all a wonderful weekend!

  • So excited for Lena Dunham’s book, which comes out on Tuesday. These little advice videos are hilarious.
  • How to cook brussels sprouts – just in case anyone needs a refresher.
  • This article makes me want to start a book club where we actually read books.
  • I think I might need this dress.
  • Big sale at J. Crew this weekend! Additional 40% off of sale items – I got a couple cute fall tops for myself, and some coordinating outfits for Cooper and his little cousin!

Happy Labor Day Weekend! Do you all have fun plans? I’m off to the beach and cannot wait.  This week was spent recovering from my cousin Clare’s wedding last weekend, which was absolutely gorgeous and so much fun. But between the whirlwind of activities (and late night afterparty around the campfire) and the heat wave we’ve been having, I’m ready for a little downtime and some cooler temps. Some fun links and pics to get you through these last few hours until the three day weekend (I hope everyone is leaving work early today!):

Happy Friday, friends! What are you up to this weekend? I’m still waiting for my baby nephew, if you can believe it.  At first I thought he was just fashionably late like his favorite auntie, but now I’m afraid he’s bordering on rude.  I had some fun plans this weekend that I’m going to have to miss, but of course it will be well worth it. I’m so excited to finally meet this little person, and to find out his name (my sister and her husband have it narrowed down to two and are going to flip a coin at the hospital – true story).  I have so many personalized and monogrammed items in my (virtual) shopping carts all over the interwebs, I can’t wait to finally complete my purchases with an actual name! Hint: it’s going to start with one of the letters above.

PSA: the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale ends on Sunday. So if you haven’t stocked up already, add that to your to do list for the weekend. My top five recommendations (aside from the Kate Spade necklaces) would be:

{I put together this entire whale/beach/nautical themed package for Baby P, and intended for it to be a shower gift until I realized it needed to be “wrapped” in a Land’s End tote with his name on it – and of course we’re still waiting on a name.  And then I got impatient and gave it to my sister without the tote (which of course is in my cart, in two versions). But, isn’t it all just so cute? I’m pretty proud of the fact that I got every single one of these items on sale. The perks of having 20+ weeks to plan. Whale rattle here, beach towel here, all else long gone. Are you sick of all these baby clothes pics yet? At least we know there’ll be an actual baby by next week for sure.}

Happy Friday, everyone! Look at me, two blog posts in two days.  I’m pretty proud of myself! (Taking two months off creates a bit of a FF backlog, but I’m going to do my best to catch up over the next few weeks).  I hope everyone has exciting plans for the weekend.  I’m helping out at my family’s annual charity golf tournament tomorrow – the forecast is 97, so wish us all luck not dying of heatstroke.  I hope your plans involve a beach or a pool instead!

Some fun links to get you through your Friday:

  • Orange lipsticks – what are your thoughts? I went to Nordstrom the other night in search of the second one (the most neutral, obviously) but tragically it’s been discontinued.  I was already at the MAC counter so I tried on the first one just for fun, but of course it made me look like a clown.  And by clown I don’t just mean like someone wearing an absurd shade of orange lipstick, I mean like someone you would pay to come to your child’s birthday party wearing a rainbow-striped wig and make balloon animals. Yikes.
  • I would like one of these right this minute.
  • I’m working my way through Emily’s monthly beauty buys – so far I’m still on April, but I’m loving this series (I bet she gets all her products as gratis too, no fair).
  • I don’t think I’m as obsessed with Ryan Gosling as much as the average female between the ages of 15-50 (I’m too busy planning my future with this man), but I find all of this freaking out pretty hilarious.
  • How to Write a Wedding Speech – I wish every best man would read this!

{afternoon sun and a passion iced tea}

So, we made it through another week.  It’s been sunny and gorgeous and HOT here for the past few days, so I can’t complain, but I’m heading to the beach with some friends this afternoon and the forecast is mid-sixties and rain. Gotta love the Pacific NW!  I was in Spokane last weekend for my cousin’s college graduation and to see some friends – I attended law school at Gonzaga so it was fun to go back and to see how much has changed.  Luckily some things haven’t, like my favorite bar at the Davenport Hotel…or my old apartment, which was huge and beautiful and somehow only cost $495 a month.  Sigh.

Some fun links and pics from the week.  Wishing you all a wonderful weekend. xoxo

  • I would like someone to make this salad for me for lunch today
  • Fun Instagram tips (you know I love me some Instagram!)
  • Watermelon popsicles
  •  I need a new bag for all my weekend trips this summer – how cute is this one?
  • Food halls of NYC – this makes me want to plan a trip back!

{look what the april showers brought!}

Hello, Friday! I’m off to Austin for a very dear friend’s bachelorette party this weekend, and could not be more excited for some girl time, sunshine, and BBQ.  OK maybe not that last part (Austin is wasted on this picky vegetarian!), but I’m looking forward to exploring the city, particularly the music scene.  My weather app is predicting 91-degree temperatures, so I’m not sure how much we’ll stray from the pool, but once we do…..look out, 6th Street! And of course, the Blazers are playing in Portland tonight, but I’ll be cheering them on from Texas – I’m going to try not to jinx them like I did last week!

Some fun links for your Friday morning – including one for Cinco de Mayo and one for the Derby! Wishing everyone a wonderful weekend.

  • One of my favorite posts from my friend Yoona’s blog (please note that “Cuz” and I have the same exfoliator).
  • Cinco de Mayo cupcakes – and quite a few helpful cupcake tips.
  • How amazing is Emma Stone in this lip sync battle?
  • A mint julep recipe in honor of the Kentucky Derby.
  • Getting to know George Clooney’s fiancé.

Adorable “around the world” calendar from Rifle Paper Co. – compliments of my Pop Sugar box

For my birthday back in November, my sister gave me a subscription to Pop Sugar, a monthly delivery of fun beauty products, home goods, accessories, treats, etc.  It can be hard to get through the gray, rainy winter months  in Seattle, so it’s been so much fun to receive a box full of surprises each month – the gift that keeps on giving!  And the “around the world” calendar is inspiring me to renew my passport and plan a trip!  Wishing you all a wonderful weekend – I’m off to Arizona and I cannot wait!  It’s not exactly international travel, but the forecast for Tucson is in the 80s, so this permanently cold Seattleite will take it.

I’m obsessed with my new detox cleanser  (also from Pop Sugar) – I can literally feel it working

Whole wheat chocolate chip “lactation” cookies

This recipe comes from a friend of a friend (who doesn’t know I’m posting it, but thank you Ellen all the same!).  I whipped up a double batch for a cousin and a girlfriend who both had babies last week, and after posting a photo on Instagram enough people asked me for the recipe that I thought I’d share it.  Note that these are worth making even if you aren’t a new mom (they’re safe for men and non-lactating women too!) – they’re essentially just extra healthy cookies with brewer’s yeast, which can aid in milk production but is also full of protein and B vitamins that we all need.  Since I could only find it in a large tub, I had lots of leftover yeast and thought I’d be extra healthy and put some in my smoothie in the morning…..let’s just say, it’s better in the cookies.

As you’ll see, this recipe is pretty flexible.  Makes 18-20 small cookies.

1/2 cup (1 stick) butter (you could also use coconut oil)
1/2 cup brown sugar (a generous half cup)
1 tablespoon flaxseed meal, such as Bob’s Red Mill
1 heaping tablespoon brewer’s yeast
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup whole wheat flour
1/4 cup almond meal
1/2 cup oats (a generous half cup)
1/2 – 1 cup chocolate chips, or to taste
Raisins, dried cranberries, and/or nuts, optional and to taste

Melt the butter (or coconut oil) and let cool for a bit.  Mix the flaxseed meal in a small bowl with 3 tablespoons water and let sit for a few minutes until it gels. Mix melted butter and sugar together in a large bowl with a spoon or rubber spatula (these cookies work best when mixed by hand rather than with an electric mixer). Add flax/water mixture, brewer’s yeast, vanilla, baking soda, and salt; mix well.  Add in flour, almond meal, oats, chocolate chips, and other add-ins if using.  Mix until just combined.  Chill if you feel like it.  Bake tablespoon-sized cookies for 8-10 minutes at 390 degrees F (not a typo).

Friday Faves, Portland Edition

Happy August 9th, everybody! Today is my brother’s wedding day, so it’s an extra exciting day around here. I spent a lot of time in Portland over the past week, in preparation for the wedding festivities, so please enjoy some of my “Portland Faves” while I’m off to get my hair and makeup done (and have a mimosa):

image

My all time favorite food cart, from the city that made food carts hip. My perfect lunch: “bambino” size Whole Bowl, hold the sour cream and olives, for $5. I’ve been saying for years that I wanted to bring WB to Seattle, but I recently discovered the “GFF” cart and its a pretty close second.

photo 1

Stumptown coffee at Petunia’s, my favorite vegan, gluten-free cafe in the Pearl – I didn’t realize when I ordered my Americano that “vegan” meant no half and half, just almond milk – only in Portland! (also: reasons I could never actually be vegan).

photo 2

Pre-wedding brow wax at Blush, my first stop whenever I’m in town.

My Grandpa Nelson passed away fifteen years ago, but during his life he had the most amazing (and enormous) garden and orchard. Rows and rows of tomato plants, corn, carrots, potatoes, tons of berries, plums, apples, pears – I could go on and on. One of the saddest things to watch after his death was the deterioration of his garden. It’s only taken 15 years, but this year my dad planted his first tomato plants.  I even got to make a yummy pasta with the first red ones!

image

Last Friday night I drug my mom, aunt and cousins to dinner at Simpatica, the restaurant where my parents hosted the rehearsal dinner for my brother’s wedding last night (blog post coming Monday, get excited).  I wanted to see the space, taste some wines, and do some last minute layout-planning for the rehearsal dinner, but as a perk we all enjoyed an outrageous four course meal. 1st: fried squash blossom stuffed with herbed chèvre on a buttermilk dipping sauce; 2nd: baby mixed greens, grilled haricot verts, blueberries, chopped almonds, red wine vinaigrette; 3rd: fennel-crusted Oregon Albacore, sautéed padron peppers, cherry tomatoes, corn, basil, green goddess dressing; 4th: peach crisp, crème fraîche ice cream.

I hope everyone is looking forward to something fun this weekend.  Wish me luck on (co) writing my best man speech – nothing like waiting until the very last minute! xoxo
